Pedro Villegas

Mexico City Faculty

Originally from Nezahualcóyotl, State of Mexico. He studied music at the Faculty of Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) under the professorship of Dr. Juan Carlos Laguna. During the 2012-2013 school year he received a scholarship from the “Fondation Turquois” to study at the Academy of Music “Prince Rainier III” in the Principality of Monaco with Professor Luc Vander Borght. In 2019 he obtained a Master of Arts degree in the field of music performance from the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, Austria, where he was part of Professor Eliot Fisk’s class.

Pedro has given recitals in some of the most important venues in Mexico City and has been invited as a concert performer in festivals in Mexico, and in countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium and Chile. He has performed as soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica Sinaloa de las Artes (OSSLA) and the Orquesta Juvenil Universitaria Eduardo Mata (OJUEM). He has also received scholarships from the Fondo para la Cultura y las Artes del Estado de México (FOCAEM) and the Programa de Creadores Escénicos del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA). In 2016, he was awarded the “Presea Acolmiztli Nezahualcóyotl” by the City Council of the Municipality of Nezahualcóyotl, in recognition of his work in the dissemination of art and culture in that community.

He has won more than twenty awards in national and international interpretation competitions throughout his career, among them:

-1st place in the International Guitar Competition of Culiacán 2016.

-Special prize “Joaquín Rodrigo” in Koblenz International Competition 2016, Germany.

-2nd place in Twents International Guitar Competition 2016, The Netherlands.

-1st place in the International Guitar Competition of Taxco 2014.

-1st place in the National Guitar Competition of Durango 2016.

-1st place in the National Guitar Competition of the University of Guadalajara 2015.

-1st place in the National Guitar Competition of the National Conservatory of Music 2014.

-1st place in the National Guitar Competition “Ramón Noble 2014” in the city of Pachuca.

-1st place in the National Guitar Competition “City of Colima 2014” (Category “Concertists”).

-1st place in the National Competition “Virtuosismo Guitarrístico 2011” in the city of Morelia.

-1st place in the National Guitar Competition “City of Colima 2009” (Category “Young Talents”).

-1st place in the National Guitar Ensemble Contest 2009.

He currently teaches at the Instituto Superior de Música del Estado de Veracruz, the Centro Morelense de las Artes and the Facultad de Música de la UNAM.

In addition to his career as a performer and professor, he works in the field of luthier specializing in the construction of classical concert guitars. His first approach to this craft was under the guidance of the Mexican guitar maker Joaquín Vega, and later with the renowned Belgian luthier Walter Verreydt.

He has been collaborating as a guitar teacher and guitar building workshop instructor at Kithara Project Mexico City since 2022.
